چکیده

This paper presents a method for solving Poisson’s equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions on an irregular bounded three-dimensional region. The method uses a nodal-point discretization and adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) on Cartesian grids, and the AMR multigrid solver of Almgren. The discrete Laplacian operator at internal boundaries comes from either linear or quadratic (Shortley–Weller) extrapolation, and the two methods are compared. It is shown that either way, solution error is second order in the mesh spacing. Error in the gradient of the solution is first order with linear extrapolation, but second order with Shortley–Weller. Examples are given with comparison with the exact solution. The method is also applied to a heavy-ion fusion accelerator problem, showing the advantage of adaptivity. Published by Elsevier Inc. Solving Poisson’s Equation using Adaptive Mesh Refinement

This report discusses an implementation [1] of an Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) Poisson solver which solves Poisson’s equation using multigrid relaxation. Local refinement introduces several added issues. Special care has been taken to match the solution across coarse/fine interfaces so that the solution maintains global second order accuracy. The nested mesh hierarchy can be defined by the us...

A Cartesian Grid Embedded Boundary Method for Poisson’s Equation on Irregular Domains

We present a numerical method for solving Poisson’s equation, with variable coefficients and Dirichlet boundary conditions, on two-dimensional regions. The approach uses a finite-volume discretization, which embeds the domain in a regular Cartesian grid. We treat the solution as a cell-centered quantity, even when those centers are outside the domain. Cells that contain a portion of the domain ...

A Fourth-order Cartesian Grid Embedded Boundary Method for Poisson’s Equation

In this paper, we present a fourth-order algorithm to solve Poisson’s equation in two and three dimensions. We use a Cartesian grid, embedded boundary method to resolve complex boundaries. We use a weighted least squares algorithm to solve for our stencils. We use convergence tests to demonstrate accuracy and we show the eigenvalues of the operator to demonstrate stability. We compare accuracy ...

An Adaptive Cartesian Grid Embedded Boundary Method for the Incompressible Navier Stokes Equations in Complex Geometry

We present a second-order accurate projection method to solve the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on irregular domains in two and three dimensions. We use a finite-volume discretization obtained from intersecting the irregular domain boundary with a Cartesian grid. We address the small-cell stability problem associated with such methods by hybridizing a conservative discretization of the...

Fast Finite Element Method Using Multi-Step Mesh Process

This paper introduces a new method for accelerating current sluggish FEM and improving memory demand in FEM problems with high node resolution or bulky structures. Like most of the numerical methods, FEM results to a matrix equation which normally has huge dimension. Breaking the main matrix equation into several smaller size matrices, the solving procedure can be accelerated. For implementing ...
